Dear all, not sure if this is appropriate but my apologies in advance. B&H Photo in NYC has the projector for 667.00 USD with free expedite shipping. I was waiting for this opportunity for almost 6 month and now I just ordered mine.
Not sure how long it will last but last summer it was like a few days.
Cheers

The Optoma GTX 1080 HD projectors are an excellent value considering price/performance.   These projectors can be found in the $650 to $750 price range.   But be careful that you are not buying a "refurbished" or "open box" unit.  One thing interesting about these projectors is that although they have plastic cases, they do have a glass lenses.   I have found that the projection quality of the GT1080s to be quite good.   However, the resultant image display quality will highly depend on what screen material it is projected onto, the nature of the screen - curved or flat, and the warping/blending software.

In my case, I am using a Formica material for my screen, painted with a white Kiltz primer.  The screen size is 24' x 5' setup as a 12' diameter curved screen.   The display image size is 48" x 23' for a 220 degree wrap.   Overlap on the three projectors is about 10%.  I am using PixelWix EVO, which is the warping and auto-blending software.  I am very pleased with the overall display results as interfaced with a single EVGA GTX980 graphics card, in a 3-window display mode with FSX running at a fixed 30 fps rate.

#Mike, I asked this question somewhere else with not response. Have similar screen and have already two Optima GT 1080.
Some folks are using just two projectors. Do you have an opinion on two vs three?
Thanks

Hello Luis,

Regarding the number of projectors one might consider for a Sim display....  There is no right or wrong answer on this matter - it is all personal preference.

You may very well find that a two projector setup is good for your particular Sim setup.  But since you are asking the question...   I'm guessing that you are looking for better results.   I think it is more common, and perhaps a better approach to use three projectors with a fairly large overlap (15% to 30%) for better blending results.   This kind of approach would yield a very nice 120 degree wrap-around display.   If you desire a larger display coverage, eg. 220 degrees, then you must be prepared for some compromise in the display image quality in the blended areas.

There are issues that involve the physical mounting of the projectors that must be considered as well.  For this...  You might find it convenient to use one of the projection calculators.   PixelWix has a nice one.   Here is a link to a short video describing their product.

Here is another PixelWix video showing their AutoBlend product that may give you some additional ideas as to you might proceed.

Using a utility like the projection calculator can save you a lot of time, and I believe it is worth the investment.  Trying to guess at all this can be very frustrating.  I would suggest that you follow the lead of others, and go with a three projector setup.  I think you will be pleased with the final results.

Many Thanks Mike for taking the time. You are right, will keep my original plan and will buy the third projector.

Cheers
